Westfield Opens North Edison Tourney With a Win

Westfield White opened the North Edison tournament with a 10-5 win over a tough Boro Bombers team from Hillsborough. Westfield fell behind 3-0 in the 1st inning on a few walks and a couple of nice hits by the Bombers. Michael "Mobi" Mobarakai came in with 2 outs in the 1st inning and got the final out from the only batter he faced in the inning. Scott Tupper made a nice defensive play in center field in the inning to limit any further damage.

The Westfield bats came alive in the 2nd and the boys scored 7 times in the inning. Nick Mele, Devin Anderson and Chris Boutsikaris got things started with 3 consecutive singles. Following an out, Chris Varano recorded his 1st of 3 hits and knocked in 2 of his 3 RBIs on the night. Scott Tupper's hard ground ball to short could not be handled by the Bombers' shortstop and the inning continued. With 2 outs, Tommy Summers kept the rally going with an RBI single. Eric Varakian and Chris Rinaldi followed Summers with consecutive singles and when the dust settled, 7 White Blue Devils crossed the plate.

Westfield add runs in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings and extended the lead to 10-3. Meanwhile, Michael Mobarakai was mowing down Bombers with apparent ease. Mobi pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief and did not allow a batter past 1st base in the 1st 3 innings of work. In the 5th inning the Bombers staged a rally with a walk, a stolen base and back-to-back singles. Chris Rinaldi came on to relieve Mobi and he pitched out of the inning without further damage and he closed out the 6th to preserve the win.

Notes...Varano was 3 for 3 with 3 RBIs. Rinaldi (2 RBIs) and Mele each had two hits. Varakian, Anderson, Boutsikaris, Murray Mobarakai and Summers each added a hit. Scott Tupper scored twice and Brett Robertshaw scored the go ahead run in the 2nd.

Westfield White has a day off on Tuesday, July 7th and then they return to action on Wednesday night (8 PM) against Montgomery in the Bridgewater tournament.
